More than 100 young dancers and choreographers from 48 dance troupes in Hcm city and other provinces are participating in a training course launched this week by the HCM City Dance School.
"Without young talent, the art will decline," says People’s Artist Vu Viet Cuong, one of the organisers for the new Dance Creation course.
Cuong says better training and management will play an important role in improving the country’s dance profession.
The curriculum for the course includes 13 subjects, including ballet, music for dance, and the language of folk dance.
Cultural researchers and theatre experts, Tran Huu Ta, Ngo Hong Khanh and Le Tien Tho, developed the curricula.
Fact-finding tours to scenic landscapes, historical sites and museums will help the students gain deeper experiences about traditional folk dance skills.
"We want to help our young generation improve their knowledge about the arts, particularly the challenges that dancers face in the global economy," said Cuong.
Dance performances in Viet nam he says, are often of low quality and give audiences a poor impression of the art of dance.
Cuong hopes that the course will help dancers develop new ideas for their dance troupes, and improve management skills.
Prestigious dance schools, such as the Viet Nam Dance College, the Military Culture and Art College and the Hcm city Dance School, are facing a shortage of dancers while solo artists such as Vu Long and Hong Chau are aging.
Many young ballet dancers in big cities, who spend at least seven years training in school, have turned to other fields such as film and fashion.
"I can’t earn a living with my art," said Nguyen Thuy Hoa, a graduate of the Hcm city Dance School.
In HCM City alone, there are nearly 30 popular dance troupes but most specialise in break dancing and hip-hop routines that are often not well choreographed.
"Professional dancers need to improve their knowledge and performance skills every day. They also need to learn a modern repertory, body expression, inner emotion, jazz techniques and yoga postures," said Kim Qui, deputy chairwoman of the HCM City’s Dancers Assocation.
Qui also works as a dance teacher for children at the HCM City Children’s Cultural House where she has created dance works that combine traditional and modern styles.
"We hope cultural authorities will spend more money to support dance schools so they can improve their staff and cope with financial difficulties," said the 58-year-old Qui, a 40-year veteran of dance.
