Over ten South Korean televisions and around 200 representatives from many televisions and film studios in Vietnam last week joined a two-day Vietnam-Korea Media Co-operation Seminar organized in HCMC by the Korea Communications Commission.
At the seminar, media producers from the two nations exchanged information and experiences to boost cooperation in media and television activities. Besides, Oh Suk Kwon, head of Global Strategy Team of the Korean Broadcasting System (KBS), expressed his desire to develop long-term cooperation with Vietnamese partners to bring best cultural works to viewers.
"Although both sides have signed many contracts, cooperating activities are still limited to broadcast right purchase or through some films invested by Korea and produced by Vietnam " he said.
The Vietnam Television, or VTV, is now the main partner of KBS and has been buying some ten Korean films each year in the past two years. "We need to bolster cooperation so that we can mutually study more about filmmaking experience and cultures," he added.
Jae Sik Yoon of the Korean Broadcasting Institute reckoned that Korean film studios came here this time to discover demands and taste of audience in the country and to sound out opportunities to cooperate with local televisions and studios. Therefore, producers from the two nations can cooperate in studying, exchanging artists, and reaching new markets, he said.
Vietnamese audience love Korean movies not only for popular film stars, interesting plots, or picturesque scenes but also for cultural similarities between the two countries.
Ngo Thi Bich Hanh, vice president of Vietnam Media Corporation, said at the meeting that Korean film producers were able to "depict many cultural traits in their films, which always attract Vietnamese viewers. However, local viewers now have become more choosy and want to have films with unique topics," she added.
The high copyright fee has also limited the introduction of Korean films in Vietnam; as the fee has tripled since 2002, according to the meeting.
Therefore, according to Hanh, "cooperation is the better way for both countries as the Korea film industry is well-known for its experience and technology while our country can provide many interesting stories and topics."
Some films produced by both nations were also presented at the seminar such as Bong nhien toi muon khoc (Suddenly I wanna cry), Co dau vang (The golden bride), and Duong mon Ho chi minh (The Ho Chi Minh Trail). On the sideline, some Korean representatives introduced latest movies and TV shows to local partners at the Television Fair at the New World Saigon hotel
