Vietnam Dance talents: Only a few chances for shining

Nhan Dan Online- The national dance talent competition concluded after four days from May 19-22, at the Hanoi Opera House. The competition provided an opportunity for young dancers to show their talents.
After six years since the second national dance talent contest in 2002, young dancers  had the opportunity to perform. This was a performance of 49 dancing solists. They are not from only professional theatres such as Vietnam Opera and Ballet Theatre, the Ho chi minh city Opera and Ballet Theatre, the Vietnam Light Music Theatre but also from provincial art troupes from the northern mountainous provinces of Lao cai Tuyen Quang and Ha Giang.

Most of the candidates are of 20 years old but they have spent at least five to seven years following the art.

Having spent years for performance for only ten minutes on stage, dancers have only a few chances for such “ten minutes”. People’s Artist Chu Thuy Quynh said that after the contest launched, people from the Vietnam Dancers’ Association came to the localities to witness the hardship dancers had to experience for the competition and saw their potential. The problem is the lack of opportunity for talented artists to perform.

Forty nine dancers at the contest were accompanied by 31 musicians, 44 choreographers with 96 performances. The quality is quite similar among those from different localities.

The A prize went to Ta Thuy Chi from the Ho Chi Minh City Dance School, Nguyen Thi Thanh Thanh from the Army’s Art School and Cao Duc Toan from the Vietnam Opera and Ballet Theatre.

The B prize were given to Phan Van Luong from the Vietnam Opera and Ballet Theatre, Nguyen Thi Quynh Huong from the Military Zone 4 Art Troupe; Pham Chi Thanh from the Vietnam Dance College; Leo Van Thao from the Military Zone 1 Art Troupe; Bui Viet An from the Vietnam Opera and Ballet Theatre; Nguyen Manh Hung from the Vietnam Dance College; Nguyen Thi Nhu Trang from the Army Song and Dance Troupe; Ho Phi Diep from the Ho Chi Minh Opera, Ballet and Symphony Theatre and Nguyen Phuong Linh from the Vietnam Song, Dance and Light Music Theatre.

C prize were presented to other eight dancers.

People’s Artist Trinh Xuan Dinh, head of the judge panel said that in the art of dance requires high skill and yet the skill is not everything. Prize winning dancers are those who are not only successful in performing a high skill but also good artistic interpretation.

“With only ten minutes on stage, artists feature profoundly characteristics in the history, in literature or in normal life,” said Artist Dinh.

People’s Artist have proposed that a trans -Vietnam tour may be set up for dancers to give performances. “That’s not only a chance for the artists to display their talents but also help bring the art close to audiences,” she said.

A talented dancer have at most ten years to follow the art and lack of chance to display their talents. At present, dancing is only an illustrative performance in stage. It now lacks big dancing performance and also lacks audiences for this kind of art. These are all the artist’ lack to shine their talents.
