When describing the region of Doc River in the southern province of Ca Mau, one may conjure up a busy seaside town with a lot of ships traveling to and fro every day and traditional craft villages.
Doc River, so named by a general, is in a privileged location with Ong Doc River on one side and Tay Sea (Tran Van Thoi District, Ca Mau) on the other, near The Silver Stone, Cai Doi Vam seaport, wild Hon Chuoi Island, and more. The seaside town is also famous for its historical sites, pagodas, and village activities such as sailing, shipping, fishing, net weaving and seafood processing.

Sailing is known to be a hard and risky job. However from a tourist's point of view, the scene of fishing ships on the huge ocean is always particularly interesting.

If you are afraid to go out to sea you can still learn about the life of a fisherman right at this seaport. During the moon season, the seaport becomes busy with thousands of ships queuing up, making a line up to 4-5 kilometers. The holds are full of fish and shrimps. The port is crowded and lively as the villagers buy and sell and the fishermen prepare their equipments and fuel. Nets must be woven for when the ships arrive, and skilful female laborers gather on the north bank of Doc River, their brisk hands weaving nets with confidence and experience.

Rituals need to be followed, such as pointing the eyes of the ships, launching ceremonies and a ceremony of worshiping the whales that has taken place for 125 years at Lang Ong (tomb for the whales). The whales are believed to spiritually support seamen.

The whole culture is represented in each wooden ship.

The sea, the islands and Nghinh Ong Festival are cultural specialties of this seaside land. On the occasion of National Tourism Year 2008 Mekong-Cantho, Ca Mau Province is featuring Nghinh Ong as its key tourism event.

The festival is organized every year for 3 days during February 13-15 (Lunar calendar). During this time, the town is crowded with thousands of tourists. The scene of thousands of ships greeting the whales and other unique cultural activities will provide tourists with unforgettable memories.

Doc river town is now a tourism destination on Ca Mau-Doc River-the Silver Stone route, about one hour by canoe from Ca Mau City.
